Unpacking the latest trends and patterns in global military expenditure

25 April @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is pleased to invite you to a webinar ‘Unpacking the latest trends and patterns in global military expenditure’, organized in cooperation with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
On 22 April, SIPRI will release its new data on global military expenditure. New data is expected to show an upward trend in global military spending following states’ announcements to increase their defence budgets amid continuous violent conflicts and rising tensions in many parts of the world. Given the renewed commitments of several states, including some of the largest military spenders, to continue to invest in their military capabilities, it is likely that the global military burden, military expenditure as a share of gross domestic product (GDP), will also remain high.
This webinar will provide an opportunity to discuss key regional and national military expenditure trends and patterns in light of the rapidly deteriorating security environment. It will unpack the main factors driving changes in military spending levels and examine some of the widespread consequences and impacts of military expenditure.
