“Another security is possible and urgent. New scenarios for building peace from the margins: the role of cities and civil society”

On November 24, the annual conference of the Centre Delàs de Estudis per la Pau “Another security is possible and urgent. New scenarios for building peace from the margins: the role of cities and civil society” will be held, organized jointly with the Institut de Drets Humans de Catalunya and the International Peace Bureau.

The conference will take place at the Blanquerna Auditorium from 17:30 to 21:00 hours and will include a welcome panel, with the organizing entities representatives, Nora Miralles, President of the Centre Delàs, and Montserrat Tafalla, President of the Institute of Human Rights of Catalonia. There will also be present representatives of the administrations that support the conference, Antoni Montseny, Director of International Relations of the Diputació de Barcelona, and David Llistar, Director of Global Justice and International Cooperation of the Barcelona City Council.

A talk and debate with the correspondent and Professor of international relations Rafael Poch, will open the conference. This panel will be presented and conducted by the journalist Laia Soldevila, under the title: New scenarios for security after the war in Ukraine.

The next and last panel entitled “Building peace from the margins: the role of municipalism and civil society”, will be attended by Ana Barrero, President of the Spanish Association of Research for Peace (AIPAZ); Dagauh Komenan, historian specialized in international relations with an African perspective; and Carles Feixa, Professor of social anthropology and senior researcher at Transgang. The roundtable will also feature Paulo Moraes, Executive Secretary of Citizen Security of Recife (Brazil); and Óscar Escobar, mayor of the city of Palmira, who has implemented the strategy for the prevention and reduction of violence PASOS, Paz y Oportunidades; both finalist cities for the Peace Prize of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) 2022.

The aim of this conference is to highlight the role of cities and peripheries of the world in peacebuilding, as well as to reflect on other ways of building security, overcoming police and military models, to defend human rights and the protection of people.
