134 actions in 26 countries! GDAMS 2018 Report is now available

Our GDAMS 2018 latest report is finally available. According to SIPRI’s most recent data, military spending has increased in 2017 by 1.1% in real terms, and is now estimated at roughly $ 1739 billion. This reflects a constant increase over the last five consecutive years. The top 10 spenders in 2017 according to SIPRI were the USA, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, France, UK, Japan, Germany and South Korea. We must stop this, by growing a global movement against military spending!

The Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS) is an international campaign, founded in December 2014 and promoted by the International Peace Bureau, which aims to reduce the global military spending by the civil society organizations working together.

This year, 134 actions from 26 different nations have made this campaign a great success. We have welcomed many new partners and collaborators who did an incredible job to spread national awareness in their own country. The main active areas in GDAMS 2018 were North America, Europe, and Central Asia-Pacific.

This year also marked a qualitative leap forward, with the launch of a joint simultaneous press conference in 5 countries. As a matter of fact, as a new and big closure to this year’s campaign, five coordinated press conferences were organized in Sydney, Tokyo, Helsinki, Berlin and Barcelona on May 2nd. Coinciding with the publication of 2017 SIPRI data on military spending, the GDAMS final statement was as well presented on the urgency to reduce a 10% military expenditure and to redirect this money to social and development goals.

Many beautiful pictures were taken showing worldwide GDAMS events and the wonderful dedication of many activists to the cause. Furthermore, we received a great amount of selfies for the GDAMS Selfie campaign 2018, as well from partners as from external entities.
