In the context of the GDAMS, Movimiento de Educadores por la Paz (Movement of Educators for Peace) promoted a campaign for global peace in Uruguay, together with the National Convention of Workers and the Uruguayan Federation of Teachers & Workers of Primary Education. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the issue of military expenditure, calling instead for a culture of peace and human rights. The Movement published an article in the magazine Quehacer Educativo (you can read it here – in Spanish), dedicated to educators of the primary and initial levels, addressing the GCOMS’s message and mission. In addition, the Uruguayan organization was also involved in promoting the short film “Alto El Juego”, from the film-maker Walter Tournier, which speaks against weapons.
Movimiento de Educadores por la Paz, together with Federación Uruguaya de Magisterio joined the demonstration of the Workers Day in the capital, giving a speech on peacebuilding and military spending, as well as handing leaflets to demonstrators.
During demonstrations on May 1st, special activities were organized by the Movement of Peace Educators together with the Workers Organization “Central de Trabajadores”. The declaration concluded with four mentions: 1) Truth, Justice and Never again – 2) Against gender violence and all kinds of violence. No more femicides. – 3) In defense of Democracy in the Region and against neoliberalism. – 4) In favour of World Peace.
Campaign against arms, military spending, wars and conflicts. Dissemination of Infographic material against military spending. Focus on Peace and military spending during demonstrations on May 1st. Special activities against way toys are planned. Organized by the Movement of Peace Educators together with the Workers Organization “Central de Trabajadores”. Support to the II International Congress of Science and Education for Peace and Development, and also to the First IPB Meeting of Latin American Youth for Peace in Medellin (April 25-26-27, see actions in Colombia). Support to the London HUFUD meeting on April 7, 2018 which included talks from Alicia Cabezudo and Pere Ortega (http://www.hufud.org/international-peace-congress.html). On April 21, the Peace Educators Movement will organize, together with the Cultural institution Space Mixtura, a Fair in the framework of the Days of Action Against Military Spending. The Fair will include an exchange of war toys by books, for the children.
