GCOMS and IPB at the Summit of the Future

The Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS) and the International Peace Bureau (IPB) will participate in the UN Summit of the Future this September, organizing two pivotal events in New York. These discussions will bring together policymakers, civil society, and peace advocates to explore nuclear disarmament, Common Security, and the United Nations’ New Agenda for Peace.

1. Reversing the Doomsday Clock: Nuclear Disarmament and the Need for SSOD-IV

Date & Time: Saturday, 21 September, 17:30 – 20:00 EDT
Location: Church of the Covenant, New York, & Zoom
Zoom Registration: Register here
In-Person Registration: Register here (by 18 September)

This hybrid event, co-sponsored by an array of peace organizations and countries, will focus on the urgent need to push forward disarmament through the Fourth Special Session on Disarmament (SSOD-IV). With the world teetering on the brink of existential threats, our discussion will center on how SSOD-IV can help reverse the dangers of nuclear weapons and promote a more peaceful global order, as envisioned in the UN’s Pact for the Future.

Join us to hear from distinguished speakers and engage in an open discussion on how we can work together to advance disarmament. Let’s take action for a safer world by signing the open letter in support of SSOD-IV.

2. Common Security, The New Agenda for Peace, and the Pact for the Future: Redefining Security for the 21st Century

Date & Time: Saturday, 21 September, 13:15 EDT | 7:15 CEST
Location: Rosa Luxemburg Foundation-New York Office, 275 Madison Ave, New York, & Zoom
Zoom Registration: Register here
In-Person Registration: Register here (by 18 September)

The second event will focus on Common Security and the New Agenda for Peace, offering a critical space to reflect on security challenges in a fragmented, multipolar world. As global competition intensifies and trust between nations wanes, we must redefine security away from militarized concepts and toward collective well-being and disarmament.

This event will feature expert panelists exploring the principles of Common Security, as outlined in the civil society report Common Security 2022: For Our Shared Future, alongside the UN’s recommendations in the New Agenda for Peace. Participants will delve into how these frameworks can shape the future of global governance and security.

Both events will offer rich discussions and a platform for all voices to be heard. We hope to see you there—whether in person or virtually—so we can collectively strive for a more peaceful world.
