April 29 - Berlin, Press Conference: 11.00 am, Marienstr. 19/20. The International Peace Bureau is holding a press conference with representatives of the German Bundestag and members of the press to discuss the numbers and statistics released in this year's SIPRI Report on Military Spending. It is important to discuss this report with politicians and the media for raising awareness about the horrendous amounts allocated on an annual basis to the military instead of social development programmes. Especially in Germany, which is continuously being pushed by the NATO and its members to increase their military budget to 2% of the GDP, it is very crucial to make the debate about military spending an omnipresent agenda point for the society and the political sector. The participants of this event will further discuss the challenges and opportunities of a peaceful common security policy détente.
